FEBRUARY 2010 NEWSLETTER

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The days are dwindling down to a precious few.

Being President of the S.O.C.H.A. has been quite an experience to say the least. It has been wonderful meeting and making friends with so many new residents.

I hope the new residents take an interest in the community and volunteer to help in many of our monthly activities. With out their help we will not be able to continue all the events we have come to enjoy.

I wish to thank all the Board members who served with me while I was President. Working with you has made my term as President a lot easier. Your support is greatly appreciated.

New Candidates running for the board seem to be well qualified. I wish them all well. I also wish there were more of our residents running for the Board. I know there are many talented people in our community. Again, thank you all very much for everything.

-- Dick Ouimette

Saddle Oak! It’s Your Community!
By Marj Banczak

Having lived in this community for 23 years, I’ve learned as a volunteer and ex Board Member, that the park does not run by itself. It is dependent on volunteers. Volunteers for all of the various activities. Activities are the glue that holds us together and gives us the comradery we need as a community.

Also needed is a Board of Directors to supervise and advise. At this time we are seeking new members for that Board. Election will be held at the February Association meeting. Time is running out!

Too often, community residents take activities for granted, as part of their lives in a 55+ park. But it’s not that simple. Someone must plan activities and volunteer their time to make things happen.

Our Board desperately needs new members, new ideas, new blood. This is a chance to offer your services, it’s a chance to be involved in the decision making. Won’t you offer to run for the Board or chair an activity? We need your ideas and assistance.

SINGLES - BREAKFAST, OR LUNCH - OR MORE?

Many years ago, a group of singles started going out for breakfast every MONDAY. The group grew to around 15 regulars, and we went to a variety of restaurants. Recently our number has dwindled to just a few. Eventually we stopped traveling around, and now we're at CRACKER BARREL every MONDAY AT 8:30. There has been very little response to an occasional notice in the newsletter. Each of us have invited people personally, with few results.

For various reasons, some people don't want to get up early for breakfast. So how about LUNCH? Most of us are reluctant to eat alone in a restaurant. Would you like your name placed on a list of people who would like a lunch buddy, either just once or more? An organized Saddle Oak singles group has been tried in the past. Maybe it's time to try again. A pot luck? Carpool to attend concerts or theatre? Riverboat trip? Flea market?

For the February dinner at the clubhouse, there will be two singles-only tables, so check the sign-up sheets posted there.

We have someone who is willing to co-chair a new singles group. Are you interested in helping?

Call with comments, or to be placed on a LUNCH BUDDY LIST.

REPLYING TO THE NEED FOR HANDICAP SPACES....

There are only 2 parking spaces for the many handicapped people in the park - none around the back. There are 3 bicycle racks around the clubhouse.

Those of us who don't have carts in front of the ramp and handicap entrance, it is very difficult to carry our boxes through the swinging doors for our craft shows, yard sales and dishes for our pot luck dinners.

Those of us who have ailments or accidents over the years, the handicap passes help us to stay active and involved. Just ask for your doctor's signature - there no longer is a fee - just ask when you pay your car license tax.

If Saddle Oak Board just requested Management, they would have to provide the "spaces", as Saddle Oak Board has been very considerate in loaning us wheel chairs, walkers, crutches and canes.

Sincerely,
Angie Bauman

CRAFTS
– - Angie Bauman

Thanks for the holiday greeting cards to Margaret Carlin, Grant Darfler and everyone who filled the box in the library. I donated the rest to the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars who take them to the Veterans' Hospital in Gainesville. Continue to bring in your "all-occasion" cards.

In February we will be making Valentine hearts with ruffled lace, ribbons and flowers over reshaped wire coat hangers to hang on your glass, screen door or wall. I have the lite wire hangers, some laces, ribbons and flowers, or you can choose your own from JoAnne Fabrics.

We will have an example on the Craft Board at the clubhouse - Fridays 1 to 3 PM. Come to see if you are interested, or call me for details

LADIES LUNCH
- - Ruth Wheeler

PASTA FAIRE in Belleview has remodeled, and now there's a separate room large enough for our group. Lunch prices are very reasonable, and the food is excellent. While there for lunch on New Year's Day, I made a reservation for us on THURSDAY, FEB. 18 AT 12:00 NOON.

I'll include driving directions along with the sign-up sheet in the clubhouse. It's only 12 miles if you use my favorite shortcut. All ladies are welcome, and especially those who are new in Saddle Oak.

JANUARY BOARD MEETING

The January board meeting was held on Jan 6. What a shame that so few people chose to attend. It just seems that no none wants to be involved. We need volunteers to run for board positions. Also someone to take over as Treasurer. Surely it seems that people can step forward to volunteer. This is your community and you should really start to care about it. It is always the same people volunteering. So Come on residents lets do something about it.

Bereavement Committee

MESSAGE OF IMPORTANCE

For the new residents and for those who have forgotten. There is a service provided by the Bereavement Committee. When a resident of the community passes away, a calling system is started and everyone in the park is to be notified. If the family wishes a Memorial Service, one is provided by the Bereavement Committee. This is done by volunteers. This is held in the clubhouse, cake and coffee is served to those attending.

Cakes are donated by volunteers of the park. A service is provided to the families wishes. It can be a simple service, in memoy of the family member who has passed away.

I will be assisting with this committee. The volunteers who are involved will be notified and a meeting will be held to update information. If there are any questions please call Carolyn Miller

Thank you!

NOTE: Rose Robinson has resigned her position as chairperson.
