FEBRUARY 2012 NEWSLETTER

Greetings from your SOCHA president,

Here it is February……what a busy time for us. Voting for a new board is always exciting! If you are a member of the association it is very important that you come out to vote on Wednesday, February 1st. If you not a member now, please join us on February 1st, sign up to join the association and cast your vote for the board members, the purchase of our television for the clubhouse, and the 2012 budget.

As I look back over this past year as your HOA president I think about all the many new residents who have joined Saddle Oak Club and brought many new ideas with them. We have had so many wonderful events that ALL of our residents have had the opportunity to enjoy. I don’t want to sound like a politician (ha ha) and I do understand that as we get "older" it is sometimes hard to accept change but I do believe that the changes we are experiencing are good for Saddle Oak Club and I hope that we can all embrace these changes and work together to make Saddle Oak Club the best place to live in Florida!

I also want to express my gratitude to Kathy and Joanne for their support. I am sure you will agree with me that Kathy was a "breath of fresh air" for our community and we are extremely grateful for her contributions to our community and wish her well as she moves on to our "sister community" at Water Oaks. Best wishes, Kathy. Having said that, we know that we are in good capable hands with Joanne, who has been in this position before and we know that we can always count on her.

Once again, I want to thank you all for your support and words of encouragement to me during this past year. During 2012 I look forward to working with you, having fun with you and just seeing you around this wonderful community we live in!

As always, Luther and I wish you good health and happiness, Tammie Hornsby

A SIGN OF THE TIMES

Effective February 1st, 2012 the price of donuts and coffee for Saturday morning will increase $.25. Coffee will be $.75 and donuts $.75. We feel that coffee and donut for $1.50 is not unreasonable. Both of these items have gone up considerably in the last year.

In addition, beginning February 1st there will be an additional fee of $3.00 at all events for all non- residents of Saddle Oak Club. If you, as a resident, attend an event that you are only charged a $1.00 for (and that is for headcount only, as the money is raffled back to you) ...if you bring a guest to that event they will be charged $3.00.

If you, as a resident, are attending an HOA sponsored dinner/lunch/breakfast and are paying $5.00, your guest will be charged $8.00. If you are paying $7.00 for your dinner and you bring a non-resident guest, they will pay $10.00. Simply put, there will be an additional $3.00 charge for any guest that you bring to a Saddle Oak Club event.

Thank you for understanding and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact any board member.

BITS AND PIECES.....

FEBRUARY VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH

Volunteer of the Month is Jo Gearin.

Jo volunteers for just about every function we have. Jo always takes a lot of neighbors to church with her, also taking the ladies out to breakfast. Jo and Bob take all of the food to Interfaith that is collected by Saddle Oak residents and serves coffee at HOA meetings. When a dinner function is coming up you will always find her shopping for the food and then cooking it in the kitchen, plus other things too numerous to mention. What a pleasure to have such a great volunteer as a resident!

THANK YOU, AND YOU AND YOU....!!!

I would like to thank all the volunteers who helped make our Christmas Party such a fun evening. David Anderson who helped in the kitchen carving the hams and doing most of the dishes, also Toots Lobe, Jo Gearin Ginger and Tony Pace, and Terry Jansen. Thanks to Diane Keach and Nancy Pollen for doing such a great job in helping to set up, and Tammie Hornsby for all of her help in making our party such a success.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks to all the persons who were willing to help in any way for the Christmas Dinner on December 25th. It was an amazing crew who worked very hard to make this great event possible! A special thanks goes out to Kay Fiedler – without her I could not have done it. If we do not have our wonderful volunteers we, residents of Saddle Oak, could not celebrate all the great events. So, from me, a big, big THANK YOU for all who helped – AND the chicken was the best we ever had – thanks Jill and Katherine.....Terry Jansen.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I would like to thank everyone who so generously filled stockings for the Salvation Army to distribute to needy children. Also for the bears that were so beautifully dressed. Thru your donations we also sent three boxes of extra gifts. Thank you so much! Also, thank you, Jo Gearin for helping with this project....Linda Otto

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CALLING ALL GOLFERS
Interested in forming a Saddle Oak golf league?
I envision playing weekly, probably Wednesdays (not on Scramble Wednesday) at different local courses each week. You would be paired up with different people (gives you a chance to meet new people). This would be open to all golfers high or low handicap, tall or short, male or female – well, you get the idea. I know this has been tried in the past, but might be more successful with many new people moving in now.
If interested, sign up in the clubhouse and I'll contact you.....Dick Sauvageau 873-4301
Serve.
Prep time: 5 mins
Total time: 25 mins.
OLDTIMERS by Fran Fritz
There are very few of the oldtimers that have been here 20 years or longer. The last two Oldtimer Get-together parties I think there were more guests than oldtimers. As many of you know I have been organizing these get-togethers for many years but feel that it's time for me to step down. I would like to thank everyone who has helped me with these get-togethers and thank all the oldtimers who attended. Jim and I hope you have enjoyed them. I may try to get the 20 year and up residents together one afternoon this year just to reminisce. Many things have happened since Saddle Oak (Saddlebrook) came alive twenty seven years ago. See you around the park.
CALLING COMMITTEE by Fran Fritz and Grace Spiller
It is the first of the year and the Calling Committee (Fran Fritz, Grace Spiller, Jeanne Kozlowski and Jean Stephens) are working on the calling list. For those of you who are new or for those who don't understand what the calling list is or what it does let us explain. It works somewhat like an assembly line. When a resident dies the Calling Committee is notified -Fran Fritz (237-5931) or Grace Spiller (237-1856) . After learning about a death we (usually Fran or Grace if I'm not available) gather the family's arrangement information. We notify our coordinators, Jeanne Kozlowski and Jean Stephens. Once they have the information, they call their head callers. Each head caller has a list of residents whom they call. Thus the information gets circulated.
However, if you do not have an answering machine or if you have a cell phone with a long distance number, you may not receive a call. If you do not wish to receive these calls please let your caller know and your name will be removed from the calling list. If you do not know who your caller is, please call Fran or Grace. This is an act of courtesy from the Calling Committee to Saddle Oak residents, so please do not be rude to them-they are only doing their volunteer job.
When either if us is notified that a resident of the community has died, we will get in touch with the next of kin to determine what assistance the Bereavement Committee can be to them. Once arrangements (if any) are made by the family of the deceased, the Calling Committee will set in motion. Not until arrangements (if any) are known does the Calling Committee make their calls. If no arrangements are made or received by the family, the Calling Committee is notified and they make an "information only" call that there has been a death in the park.
Both of these committees (Calling and Bereavement) need volunteers. Without volunteers there would be no activities in the community. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation to and with these committees.
SALUTE TO FRAN BOLSON by Fran Fritz
I hope no one minds that I am speaking for many of Saddle Oak residents to thank Fran Bolson for all the work she does for the hospitalized, sick and home bound residents. This is not just a stand up at coffee and read a list of who needs our thoughts and prayers. This is a volunteer job where she picks up and delivers a gift card from Publix. She visits residents in the hospitals, at home, at hospice or where ever. She gathers cards and after they are signed at coffee she mails them. She follows through with residents until they are better or if the case be that they die she notifies me so the Bereavement Committee can take over. This a job that Fran has done for many years and does it well. Thank you Fran and God bless.
Water Aerobics
The facts, Ma'am, just the facts...
Who? All SOC residents and their teenage or adult guests
What? Water Aerobics
Where? The SOC pool
When? Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday (weather permitting*) from 10-11AM
Why? Good exercise that creates very low impact on one's joints. Besides, it's FUN!
How? Exercises in waist-to-chest-deep water led and demonstrated by either Gee Sauvageau or Kay Fiedler - often we also use a water aerobics CD.
Gee Sauvageau 873-4301 (generally mid-October to mid-April)
Kay Fiedler 509-4161 (generally mid-April to mid-October)
* Heavy rain, serious threat of thunderstorms, or 9:30AM temps below 500 qualify as weather NOT permitting.)
QUIZ FOR BRIGHT PEOPLE
Each month we will ask a question in the newsletter. If you know the answer (or if you just have a good guess), place your answer, name and phone number on a sheet of paper. Deposit your answer in the box on the wall of the club house.
This month's question is:
What famous North American landmark is constantly moving backward?
(The answer will appear in next month’s newsletter as well as the "bright person" who answered the question)
Last month’s question was:
Name the one sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or the leader until the contest ends.
The answer: Boxing
These bright people answered the question correctly:
Judy Marks, Karen Sammons and JoAnne Ebright
Needle Contest Winner!
The needle contest winner this month is Bertha Hendrickson.
Thanks to all that entered. Watch for the needle in each issue of the Saddle Oak newsletter. If you find the needle, submit your entry (include your name and location of the needle) in the box in the clubhouse.
A list of states in each region is included on the sign up sheet.
If you would like to be the chairperson of your club, please enter your name on that line.
Once the clubs are formed, they will each decide their individual activities such as dinner once a month, a party at the clubhouse, etc.
SUNSHINE REPORT - Fran Bolson
