JULY 2011 NEWSLETTER

Letter from the SOCHA president........

July...fireworks, picnics, family reunions, hot summer days....and last but not least....hurricanes!!!! June has come and gone and we had a couple of nice celebrations, a pool side social event on a beautiful Friday evening with games/music and conversation with friends and a Father's Day breakfast. Thank you to Kay& Bob Fielder and all of the people who helped her make it a success and thank you to Linda and Jim Otto for hosting the Father's Day breakfast. There was a small impromptu golf cart parade on Memorial Day which is always fun to both participate in and watch. I would like to remind residents that we do have an Event Calendar and forms for those of you who wish to chair an event or parade. It is always best to be able to "advertise" the event so that all residents have an opportunity to attend or participate.

June has been "clean-up" month and kudos to everyone who has been working so hard on their yards and houses. Much of the landscaping looks better but there is always room for improvement. We want to take care of our community to make sure it continues to look its very best!

A reminder to those of you leaving on vacation, please make crime watch aware, make arrangements for your yard to be cut and trimmed, cancel your paper and stop your mail. Please keep in mind that the newsletter staff is always looking for information for the newsletter that we can share with everyone. We hope you like the new format for the newsletter calendar....it should make finding the events for the month much easier to see and remember. That is all for now....stay healthy, happy and..cool!!!

BITS AND PIECES.......

JULY VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH

Let us designate Fran Bolson as Volunteer of the Month! Fran is in charge of the Sunshine Report, visiting people in the various hospitals, nursing homes, rehabs, and in their own homes. Fran also takes care of having cards signed and delivered to the appropriate persons. Also, she is responsible for giving out gift cards, which are greatly appreciated. This takes up a lot of Fran’s time, and she has been doing it for many years. Thank you, Fran, for doing such a great service for the people of Saddle Oak!

SUNSHINE REPORT

As we go to press, there is no one from Saddle Oak in the hospital. Those hospitalized last month and now recuperating include Bill Wyllie, Betty Jo Kennedy, Gladys Ouimette and Betty Cigrand. Those in rehab are Al and Janet Stacy, Alan Warneke and Anna Bishop. Ellie Evans and George Overman are in nursing homes and Bunnye Brinson in assisted living. Keep these folks in your thoughts and prayers. Publix gift certificates are given to those residents who have spent at least 2 nights in the hospital and residents can only receive one gift certificate in a 12-month period.

BEREAVEMENT

PAUL ANDERSON passed away on June 9th. He is survived by his wife, Connie. His mother-in-law, Emily Davison, is also a resident here.

MARIE JAREST passed away on June 12th and is survived by her husband, Maurice (Moe).

THANK YOU, AND YOU AND YOU….!!!

A BIG thank you to Jim Blattner and Donna Clarke for organizing and delivering all of the items collected for the tornado victims in Joplin, Missouri. It was a very kind thing for them to do, and thank you also to those residents who took the time to go through their belongings and donate them to the cause. So many people lost everything and any help we gave them was a good thing! Again, thanks to everyone involved and especially to Jim and Donna.

I want to thank everyone who sent cards, flowers and candy, and most importantly, Good Thoughts to me during my recent illness. Thank you also to those who made the visit from my West Coast family happier. It is delightful to live in a community that really does care about each other. Diane Anderson.

Thanks to Kathy Smith for making slider sandwiches for the Bingo Night. If not for Kathy we would have had hardly any snacks since we had very few cakes. Thank you, Kathy, for being so thoughtful!

Golf Cart Usage

Provided by the Marion County Sheriff's Department

(This article is a follow-up to our information provided in last month's newsletter)

As the use of golf carts has increased, owners of these vehicles have been asking numerous questions about where and when these vehicles can be used. The purpose of this article is to try and answer these questions.

Florida Statues 320.01(22) defines a golf cart as a motor vehicle that is designed for operation on a golf course or for sporting or recreation and the vehicle is not exceeding 20 mph.

Florida statute outlines the following uses:

1. A golf cart can be operated on a state road that has been designated for golf cart use. No state roadway in Marion county has been approved for golf cart use.

2. To cross a portion of a course which intersects a roadway approved for golf carts or a roadway that intersects a course or mobile home park.

The golf cart can only be operated during the hours between sunrise and sunset. If night time driving is optional, then the golf cart is to be equipped with headlights, turn signals and a window. The statute further states the cart should have efficient brakes, reliable steering, safe tires, rear view mirror and red reflective devices on the front and rear of the cart.

A golf cart may not be operated on public streets by anyone under fourteen years of age. (Not sixteen as previously printed in the newsletter)

Florida Statue 316.2125 defines the operation of golf carts in retirement communities. The state of Florida allows the use of golf carts in a self contained (gated) community if the golf cart has the safety equipment listed above. However, the local government of Florida DOT can prohibit the use of golf carts if the governing body determines a safety hazard exists.

Also, if the operator of the golf cart were to commit a traffic infraction like running a stop sign, the operator could receive a traffic citation.

The appeal of a golf cart is a fun and convenient way to get around. Please use caution when operating one.

Please contact the Marion County Sheriff's Office if you have further questions..732-8181
