MARCH 2010 NEWSLETTER

Message from the President

By now you have probably heard, that there has been a “changing of the guard” on the Board of Directors. Our newest board members are Tammie Hornsby and Katherine Sitkowski. Both very qualified women and we welcome them.

The new officers are:

President: Nancy Dougherty
First Vice-President: Kathy Smith
Second Vice-President: Linda Otto

What a wonderful turn out for our Annual Association Meeting! Approximately 200 people in attendance. Such good fellowship! Residents were volunteering left and right. That is the kind of community we are! Let’s keep it up all during the year. The Association meeting, as well as Saturday Morning Coffee, are good places to communicate. Besides, there are doughnuts. I hope to see you there.

I would like to address the fact that as president, I am a part time resident. When I was nominated, I would accept, only if I had a capable vice-president to stand in when I was gone. Kathy Smith more than qualifies for that position. Thank you, in advance, Kathy for all the help you will provide.

We have a number of exciting events coming up. The Yard Sale, Easter Buffet and a Fashion Show/Tea Party are all in the works. Hope to see your smiling faces! Health and happiness!
Nancy Dougherty

Talk to Pete regarding your needs. Sun Home Sales also offers a referral fee to residents. Again, see Pete for details. If you are thinking about upgrading to a new home, see Pete for details about our New Home Program.

RESIDENT SURVEY: Please take the time to complete the resident surveys requested by Sun Communities. Your answers will help us serve the needs of our residents.

2010 IMPROVEMENTS: As some of you have observed, the three-rail fence is continuing along the perimeter of our community. The restrooms in the Clubhouse are scheduled for renovation this year during the month of March. There will be some attention placed on card tables and pool tables at the clubhouse. The TV used for bingo at the clubhouse is on order and will be replaced this year. The holes you see around the community are a continuation of our water main gate valve upgrades. In addition, we have begun the replacement of water meter boxes to a larger and stronger unit.

Reminders:

· Please remember, when selling your home, the buyers must receive prior approval from my office before signing any documents or moving in.

· Speed limit is still 15 mph within our community. Stop signs mean STOP!

· Pets are not permitted to run loose – EVER!

· As the weather improves, please pay more attention to your yards; flowers, shrubs, lawns, general landscaping…

Bloodmobile -

Here Tuesday, April 20, 2010
2pm to 5 pm
DIRECTLY FROM THE FLORIDA'S BLOOD CENTER

There is no substitute for blood. It has to come from one person in order to give to another. A critical number of voluntary donations are required every day to meet the need for blood in the areas we serve. However, we are consistently falling short, and falling short means we may not have enough blood for someone like you. IF YOU CAN POSSIBLY DONATE BLOOD - PLEASE DOO !!!.

A few persons have been denied the ability to give blood because the iron in their blood was too low. The following is a list of foods high in iron: beef, liver, lean meat, seafood, spinach, lettuce, baked potato, watermelon, greens (turnip, mustard, collard, spinach, raisins, prunes, beans, cereals (iron fortified) A sign up sheet will be on the board at Coffee Hour, the second Saturday of April.

Congratulations to all the performers who put on such a wonderful show for the residents of Saddle Oak. Without these people coming forward to volunteer this event would not have been possible. A special thank you to Dorthea Wiley and Bob Brown for all their efforts in putting this show together.

I would like to thank Betty Cigrand, Jeanie Kozlowski and her sister Lillian for peeling all the potatoes for the Valentine's Day Dinner .great job. - Linda Otto

Valentine's Day Dinner Thanks

I hope everyone who attended Valentine's Day Dinner enjoyed it. Entertainment was great. I would like to thank all the volunteers who worked so very hard to make it a success. Jo Gearin, Bill and Iirene Kramer, Tony and Ginger Pace, Frank and Carolyn Miller, Diana Germain, David and Diane Anderson and Bob Smith. Bob and Frank really dug in to do the dishes. I wonder if they hire out. Also I would like to thank my husband Jim who listened to my thoughts for a dinner and says absolutely not then rolled up his sleeves and dug right in to help. Without all these wonderful people working these functions we would not be able to hold parties like this. It would really be great to see some new people offering help - Llinda Otto

Thank you Linda Otto for the great dinner you chaired for Valentine's day.As always you did a great job..

A "Pox" on the Shingles
by Marj Banczak

Get Your Shingles Shot!

Enough Already! But the shingles which have invaded my body have a mind of their own. Their goal is to give me agony and pain for the near future.

I'm living in my nightgown and robe. I watch the neighbors for excitement. But, these four walls are closing in. But, then, I do have a social life and a reason to get dressed and go out occasionally. Maybe a doctor's appointment isn't a social event but it is a treat.

I am also thankful for my daughter, Nancy, and her husband, Mike. They come often to bring food and help in so many ways. I would be lost without them.

I'm writing this article to remind everyone to get a shingles vaccination. Don't wait, don't walk just run to the doctor and make this happen. Don't have to fight this illness for weeks and months when it can be prevented with a simple shingles shot. This, too, shall pass, but please let it be quick. As I said, "A pox on the shingles".

Dear Lord, So far today, am I doing alright? I have not gossiped, lost my temper, been greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish or self indulgent. I have not whined, complained, curses or eaten any chocolate. I have charged nothing to my credit card. But I will be getting out of bed in a minute. I think I will really need your help then. Author unknown (forgot where I got this prayer) Does anyone have a copy of “Who is this old lady in my mirror?”

Annie Carlyle

Lap Robes

I did not request lap robes for nursing home residents for Christmas gifts this last year like I have for many years in the past because of Jim's health. I did receive several which have been distributed.

Thanks to those of you who are still contributing to my cause of keeping the residents of nursing homes who have either few or no one visiting them with a gift of kindness. I'd especially like to thank Corinne Ray, Linda Norton and Lorraine Dougherty. The last batch (8) that Lorraine brought to me were taken to Hospice.

It seems to be quite cold where the cancer treatments are given and they were very thankful for the lap robes for people to cover up with during their stay there. I always know that Corinne has been at my house when there is a lap robe in a bag hanging on my back door railing. Thanks to those mentioned and to anyone who has ever contributed to this cause over the many years that I have been doing this. Margaret Carlin has quilted at least one beautiful lap robe each year. Try to find some very special shut in for the robes she makes. They are a very cherished gift to that special shut in. If there is anyone who would like to contribute to this cause I would gladly see that it finds a place with a grateful person. Thanks again everyone.

Let's Cook Something

Chicken scampi

Chicken
4 boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into strips
3/4 cup Bisquick
1 teaspoon seasoning salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
Pasta
1/2 box bow tie pasta (or your favorite pasta - fettuccine would also work well)
For the sauce
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup olive oil
1 teaspoon dried parsley
1 teaspoon dried basil
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
3 cloves garlic, minced
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/4 cup white wine

Directions
To make the chicken, mix all ingredients except chicken in a plastic bag.
Add chicken and shake to coat.
Saute until done.
Set chicken aside.
To make the pasta, while chicken is cooking, make half a box of bow tie pasta according to directions on the box.
For the sauce: In a skillet, heat the butter or margarine and oil over medium high until the butter/margarine melts.
Add the parsley, basil, oregano and garlic and salt and mix together in the skillet.
Stir in lemon juice, white wine, and mushrooms and bring to a boil.
More butter/margarine can be added if needed.
Add to pasta and top with chicken.
