MARCH 2012 NEWSLETTER

Thoughts from the SOCHA president,

Saddle Oak elections are over for another year!! For those of you who were unable to attend, our board members are as follows:

Tammie Hornsby
Dan Janis
Katherine Sitkowski
Nancy Savel
Terry Jansen
Donna Frakes
John Record

I want to thank everyone who participated in the process. It is wonderful to see so many people wanting to make a difference. Let's keep the enthusiasm going!! I also want to thank Nancy Dougherty and Grace Spiller for all of their contributions to Saddle Oak Club. Their knowledge of this community was so helpful to me this past year. Many thanks to you both…..enjoy your retirement!!!

Kudos to the TV committee!!! They had a goal and achieved that goal by working hard and coming up with some creative ideas and because of their hard work and the contribution from Sun Communities we will soon have our large screen TV in the clubhouse! Many thanks to all of you also!!!

By the time you read this newsletter our new community manager will be at work. Please join me in welcoming Stephanie Ray to our Saddle Oak family.

Our annual Yard Sale is scheduled for March 24th. That is always a big event for our community. Tom Pollum has agreed to chair the event this year. Harry, Kathy and ViSimmes will be in charge of the kitchen, Marge Putka will be in charge of the bake sale and Jim McCourry in charge of transportation.

Once again, I cannot say enough good things about all the wonderful volunteers we have here. Your contributions to this community are what make this a great place to live.

Luther and I look forward to seeing you around the neighborhood!

Tammie Hornsby

Karen also comes up with some really creative ideas for decorating and parties.
Keep up the good work, Karen!

THANK YOU, AND YOU AND YOU....!!!

It is so nice to know that there are so many caring people her in Saddle Oak. I wish to thank everyone for all the visits, get well cards and phone calls during my hospital stay; also the Homeowners Association for the gift card. Again, many thanks to all my friends in Saddle Oak. Irene Kramer

A TRIBUTE TO THE CRIME WATCH PROGRAM

To Jim McCourry, Bernie Kozlowski and all the volunteers (past & present) who spend their time patrolling the streets of Saddle Oak and a few neighboring areas to watch for any criminal act(s) that might be in the making or to help someone in need.

As most of you know, I have been living in Saddle Oak for many years as well as some others. We have had some crime in the past and even though it seems very safe here (and it is) it is still not a good idea to go away and leave your doors unlocked. I have been questioned as to why we need to be patrolled in the daytime – my answer is that it shows that this area is being watched and may make someone think twice before they commit an act of crime. Be careful, be safe.....Fran Fritz

SENIOR'S "SHOW AND TELL"

At coffee and donuts on Saturday, March 3rd, please bring your "old and new" pictures of Saddle Oak Club events to share with your neighbors and friends. So many of us have collected some great pictures of all of our events and we need to share with everyone. We will display them on tables and everyone can look at them and relive memories and fun times. We can only put so many pictures in the newsletter and this is a good way for everyone to see all the pictures that everyone has collected.

See you on March 3rd for coffee, donuts, pictures and memories!!!!!

POSSIBLE LIFE –SAVER

Place your car keys on your nightstand at night. If you hear someone prowling outside or trying to break into your house, press the alarm button on your key fob. This may chase away a possible intruder and will surely get the attention of the neighbors. The alarm will keep sounding till you turn it off or the battery runs down. Also good to use if you have a possible heart attack and can’t get to the phone. Have the keys in you pocket when working outside in case of a fall. Always carry your keys in your hand in a parking lot to use the alarm to scare off a possible attacker. This works!

SUNSHINE REPORT

Thanks for the kind words in last month's newsletter, but I can only do this job with the help of the residents who call me to report on our friends who are ill or in the hospital. I've been the Sunshine Chairperson since 2003 and am happy to continue. As we go to press this month, Norma Shackleton is in Ocala Regional Hospital and Dorothea Wiley is in Munroe Hospital. Darrell Lucas has returned home and Joy Matthews has gone to Key West to be with relatives. Marge Glass had knee surgery and is recuperating. Others who were hospitalized and are now at home include Meredith Barth, Shirley Seeley and Garland Boggs, Lou Wickstrom, and Irene Kramer. Richard Clements is in TimberRidge but should be home before the end of the month. Al Stacy is in Palm Garden, Sandy Fedak and Bunnye Brinson are in The Bridge, Ellie Evans is in TimberRidge, Lillian Rajewski is in Memory Lane and Ray & Arlene Wallace are in Marion Woods. Keep these folks in your thoughts.

BUYING TICKETS

This is VERY IMPORTANT! Remember to buy your tickets EARLY for any event you wish to attend. We can no longer sell tickets at the door. We must have an early count of attendees in order to purchase sufficient food for each event. Thank you for your cooperation.

REMINDER

Your guests must be registered with the office. They need to know the names of your visitors and the length of time they expect to stay. This is necessary for your guests to have full use of Saddle Oak Club facilities.

CHILD'S CAR SEAT

If anyone is in need of a child's booster car seat while they have little visitors, I have 2 booster car seats I am willing to lend – I would just like them returned when finished using. Linda Otto

Do you have a Bucket List?

We are searching for Saddle Oak residents who have their own personal "Bucket List" (Goals you would like to accomplish before your demise). If you have bucket list and wouldn't mind sharing, let us know. Our own Fran Bolson was kind enough to share her list with us this month:

As a Freshman in college, in our Psych 101 class, we were asked to write down 10 Life Goals which we hoped to accomplish in our lives. I think that is what is now called a bucket list. Mine are listed below with the dates that I fulfilled them - all except the l0th item which I hope is still a long way off.

1. Get married - 1947
2. Have 3 children - Twins in 195l and a son in 1961
3. Own a house in the country with a swimming pool - 1963
4. Visit Niagara Falls - 1949
5. Go to the top of the Empire State Bldg. in NY City - 1949
6. Visit Hawaii - 1972
7. See the Passion Play in Oberammergau, Germany - 1984
8. Walk where Jesus walked - visit to Israel - 1999
9. Take a ride in a hot air balloon - 1987
10. Die with dignity.

Every girl in that class listed #1 - no one listed #10. Half the class wanted to be a millionaire or earn a million dollars, but not me. One thing that was not on my Life Goal list but on the list of a couple of my friends and is one of my proudest accomplishments was to run my first marathon (26.2 miles) at age 70. Now at age 83, my chief goals are to be as healthy and happy as I can be each day.

Women Thoughts...

* Women over 60 don't have babies because they would put them down and forget where they left them.

* One of life's mysteries is how a 2 pound box of candy can make a woman gain 5 pounds.

* The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight because by then, your body and your fat are really good friends.

* I read this article that said the typical symptoms of stress are: eating too much, impulse buying, and driving too fast. Are they kidding? That is my idea of a perfect day.

* I know what Victoria's Secret is. The secret is that nobody older than 30 can fit into their stuff.

* If we are what we eat, I am cheap, fast and easy!

Quiz for Bright People

This month’s question is:

Of all vegetables, only two can live to produce on their own for several growing seasons. All other vegetables must be replanted every year. What are the only two perennial vegetables?

Please submit your answers in the box in the clubhouse by the 10th of the month.

Last month’s question was:

What famous North American landmark is constantly moving backward?
The answer: Niagara Falls

These bright people answered the question correctly:
John Record, Norma Shackleton, Tony Pace, Bill Spann, Judy Marks, Joann Barber, and JoAnne Ebright

(remember to include your name on your entry..we had several this month without signatures)

We apologize to: Jim Hanoian and Martha W. Smith as they submitted the correct answer to last months question about boxing but their answers missed our printing deadline.
