NOVEMBER 2009 NEWSLETTER

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGEBR>

Well the weather is finally cooling down and it’s a welcome relief from the excessive heat we have been having.

November should bring back a number of our residents for the winter months.

Hopefully we will have more residents and visitors for our Saturday morning coffee gatherings.

November will also bring about a number of fun events. Some of the bigger events are of course the Saddle Oak Craft Fair on November 7, the SOCHA Board Meeting on November 3, and the Association Meeting on November 4.

Then of course there is Thanksgiving Day Dinner on Thursday, November 26.

In addition to our special events there are the weekly bingo games, card games, dancing, luncheons, coffee gatherings, quilting/sewing, golf, bowling, outside games and I’m sure I missed a few community activities for residents to enjoy.

We are always looking for volunteers to help with all these events and without volunteers these events will all cease to exist. So, please get involved!

Have a wonderful November and a Happy Thanksgiving!

From the desk of the SOC Management---

RE: Solicitors

WARNING

A reminder more than a warning. As we all know, door to door soliciting in Saddle Oak is not allowed. Unauthorized people come into the park, start knocking on doors offering services from trimming trees, to cutting bushes, trimming hedges, cleaning yards, etc.

Offers also to steam clean your rugs. At times they may ask to be paid up front then turn and not finish the job. Some residents have been taken advantage of. Any solicitors who come to your door, refuse their services and notify the manager’s office. 873-0494

THANK YOU's

I would like to thank the Park Manager Pete Drusts for installing air fresheners in the club house.

Also for the hand sanitizers which are so important to have during this flu season. Thank You very much! -- Linda Otto

There are a lot of children who do not receive any thing but one of these gifts so please help if you can . Please try and return them to me by Nov 21 Thank You, --Linda Otto

BLOODMOBILE BLOOD DRIVE TUESDAY, 10/14/09

The Blood Drive was a great success. We had nine HEROS (as they are called) who came forward to donate. SEVEN PINTS OF BLOOD were received. The Heros are:

DIANE ANDERSON
DAVID ANDERSON
JO GEARIN
DICK HOUK
DEBRA INGLE ( welcome to our new neighbor)
TONY PACE
BARBARA SIMPSON
CARLY
THANK YOU ONE AND ALL!!!!!!!!!!

The Florida's Blood Center is the sole provider for the hospitals in Marion County. There is a desperate need for people to come forward to donate for neighbors and friends in need. There are persons in Saddle Oak that may believe they are unable to donate. The nurses that man the Mobile are strictly trained and are very professional. You are tested by a staff member to determine if you are eligible to give that particular day or not at all. Please all me If you have any questions, Marge at 873-9974

ANOTHER THANK YOU....

You know Saddle Oak is some place to live! Most of the older residents know me; those of fifteen years or so here although I am not able to participate in the activities as I use to. But the other day I wheeled my trusty improvised walker out into the yard and trimmed an unruly weed that was crowding out one of my bushes. I managed to transfer the nasty branches into my trash barrel planning to dispose of them as we all do. Instead, Wednesday I looked out of my front window and some nice person had spotted my ‘trash’ and wheeled it to the curb for me. I had almost given up that morning.

Now this is not the first time something so helpful has happened and it may have been the same with others such as me. But I thank the person and the others who take notice of the handicaps, and needs of their neighbors. We all are going to need assistance at one time or another. When I get ‘old’ I am eighty seven I will appreciate the fine caring and treatment that is so prevalent here in the Park.
Thanks to all —Charlotte Grundstrom

Olive Garden was a memorable moment for Eugene and I. All our family and Saddle Oak families joined in to make this a very happy 59th anniversary. This will be a day that will never be forgotten in our lives. So many families and park families joined us at The Olive Garden and again at Saddle Oak Club House for cake, coffee, vegetables & dip also fruit and soda. The decorations were beautiful.

A very special thanks to Betty Cigrand’s help and all those who did all the decorations.

A special thank you to my daughter Kristy McHugh for all the wonderful getting together in making it all possible. Eugene and I are amazed about all of this.

God bless everyone!

Everyone can give

Donors are the most important people in our business and a blood center has to be committed to their safety, comfort and convenience before, during and after the donation process. Our donors are literally the life blood of that organization and it could not meet the need of our communities without them. Florida,s Blood Centers (FBC) is a not-for-profit health-care organization that has been serving the community for more than 65 years. It’s life-saving mission of collecting, processing and distributing blood to those in need has a direct and immediate impact on your community’s health and welfare.

When you donate blood with FBC, you are making an immediate contribution to the health and welfare of your community. After it is collected, your blood is kept at one our regional laboratories while a sample is tested and screened at our state-of-the-art medical facility in Orlando. After testing, the results are shared electronically with our regional lab, which then delivers your donation directly to patients in need at hospitals in your community. Your donation is usually available to patients within 48 hours after it is collected.

Blood is not bought and sold like a commodity or product. We collect blood from volunteer donors, test it to ensure it meets the federal government,s standards for safety, and then distribute it to hospitals where it is transfused into patients. The collection, processing and distribution of blood constitute a vital service we provide to the community, and hospitals reimburse us for the significant costs of providing that service. This business model is followed by every licensed blood center in the country.

Ensuring the safety and reliability of the community's blood supply is not only FBC's highest priority, it is one shared by the federal government. Blood banking is closely regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and we are overseen in much the same way as the pharmaceutical industry. We follow numerous steps required by the FDA to make sure your blood is safe before it is distributed to hospitals. This type of scrutiny, including unannounced FDA inspections of our facilities, requires us to operate transparently, safely and ethically.

There are several Big Red Buses that conduct blood drives at locations throughout the Marion County region usually 7 days a week. These blood drives are vital to the local blood supply. And it is important to know that FBC supplies every hospital and medical facility in Marion County, and every local donation will likely be transfused into a patient within a couple of days on average. These hospitals include Ocala Regional Medical Center, Munroe Regional Medical Center, Timber Ridge Medical Center and West Marion Community Hospital. So, every donor in Marion County can be assured that their donation goes to someone in need in our community. And every donor can be heralded as a local hero saving lives.

To find a location near you, just call us at 1.888.9.DONATE.

ARTS & CRAFTS
Real Flower Pictures

Fridays 1:00 to 3:00 PM we will be pressing and drying real flowers in cardboard glass frames. You can press flowers like pansies from your yard or even geranium petals in a heavy telephone book (not the yellow pages) about 5 days in a sunny window on the floor. You can use your old frames or buy them at Michael's or JoAnn Fabrics with white cardboard and just touch of Elmer's glue with a toothpick.

If you are interested, come sign up and see the examples on the Craft Board and let me know as we have the rest of the supplies.

Also, thanks to all the considerate friends (Dick & Chris McCormick, Betty Heritage, Lou & Hazel Wickstrom) who recommended my carpel tunnel surgery on August 24th. After 3 month of hand therapy, it was the redeeming recovery of my broken wrist , as well as my other kind friends that helped me stay up and about.

Sincerely,
Angie Bauman

VOLUNTEERS-
THE HEART OF SADDLE OAK!
By Marj Banczak

Why do we need volunteers and what is the role for them in our community? Because volunteers keep the community alive, active and functioning.

Without volunteers there would be no social activities here in Saddle Oak. There would be no cards or Bingo, no Saturday morning coffee hour. There would be no newsletter to keep us informed about events. No Board of Directors to serve as a voice between residents and management. There would be no decorations in the clubhouse. There would be no bowling leagues or golf tournaments. A volunteer visits the ill and shut-ins and new residents. Let's not forget the crafts, sewing and quilting. These activities have leaders who volunteer not only their time but their expertise. The list goes on.

Let us also remember that these important volunteers should be treated with respect and appreciation. Their efforts help to enrich and enhance our lives and give us pleasure. Outspoken criticism causes hurt feelings and reluctance toward volunteering again.

Let us be complimentary to our volunteers and not diminish the "Saddle Oak Spirit" in this exceptional community.

So, are you ready to volunteer? Let us guarantee that your efforts are needed and will be appreciated.
